Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 3/11/2011

After 3 inches of rain last weekend, and another 3 inches of rain yesterday, the lakes and ponds are full, streams are overflowing, and this morning turned out be just ducky!

Besides the usual Song and White-throated Sparrows, Northern Cardinals, Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Phoebes, American Crows, Turkey Vultures, Dark-eyed Juncos, Canada Geese, Red-winged Blackbirds, several woodpeckers, and a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, I saw my first of the year Tree Swallow flying over Lake Monocan. The lake also sported a male and a female Bufflehead, a male and a female Hooded Merganser, and a Pied-billed Grebe. On Sawmill Creek Pond # 6, there was a single American Coot, still in non-breeding plumage with a dark gray forehead patch that has not yet turned red.
