From mid-January through mid-February, I did some birding here in Stoney Creek and up on the mountain when I was not either in Florida, on the Rockfish Valley Trail, or elsewhere in central Virginia. On February 18th, I hiked and drove around Stoney Creek as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count.
Here are a few interesting photos taken prior to the GBBC hike.
Wild Turkey
Unflattering view of a Winter Wren
Pileated Woodpecker
Yellow-rumped Warbler already showing some spring plumage
Mallard and Wood Ducks
Dark-eyed Junco with white wing bars (Wintergreen Mountain)
After my GBBC hike on the Rockfish Valley Trail on 2/17/12, Alice and I took a walk around Stoney Creek where we saw an American Crow harassing an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk and a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. The adult quickly departed, leaving the juvenile to deal with the crow. These hawks were also posted on the GBBC.
