Rockfish Valley Trail 2/11/15

Walt Childs and I went for a short hike this morning on the Rockfish Valley Trail. The temperature was near freezing when we arrived, and ice had coated the trees up in the adjacent mountains, but it was sunny, and getting warmer as we hiked. We only saw about 15 species, mostly sparrows, but there were a few other interesting birds, including a distant Red-tailed Hawk.

Iced Trees

Eastern Bluebird

Northern Cardinal

Yellow-rumped Warbler

Red-tailed Hawk

The Red-tailed Hawk flew close to us on our hike back to the car, and from its heavy barring and dark throat, appears to be a "Northern" race, winter visitor.
