Old Trail; Crozet, VA 8/4/17

It was fairly hot and humid this morning, so I hiked a couple of miles here in Old Trail. Most of the birds were already hunkered down in the shade of dense vegetation. I saw a fly on the trail path with a long oviposter.

A Green Heron was fishing at the golf course pond, and a Killdeer was on the far shore.

A huge snapping turtle popped up in the pond. It was so big that I thought at first that it might have been a beaver. I haven't seen ducks in this pond all summer - perhaps this is why?

A few avian species were foraging in the dense vegetation around the pond, and a very young Mockingbird was begging to be fed.
